A new version of the Simple Planning Tool for Climate Hazards, v2.1, is now available. Minor changes include the removal of retired data tools and resources that are no longer available, as well as updated URLs to ensure that all links are valid. We also added relevant hazard data tools that have become available over the past few years.
The most prominent change is the addition of many action-oriented resources, as recent SCIPP research and engagement has shown that this is a great need for our stakeholders and those using this tool. The formerly named menu item Incentive and Action Programs for Hazard Risk Reduction is now named Hazard Mitigation Actions and Resilience Resources. This section includes information on hazard mitigation actions, incentive programs, and overall climate resilience resources that communities can utilize to reduce hazard risks and impacts. The list of resources in this section is organized by topic: building codes and infrastructure; funding strategies and disaster costs; and hazard-specific actions and programs.

In addition, the formerly named menu item Misc Resources has transformed into Communication Strategies, Plans, and Other Resources. In this section, you will find resources that may assist in communicating the importance of hazard mitigation to achieve buy-in for planning and implementation; a Hazard Mitigation Planning Guide that SCIPP produced as an update to a FEMA Region VI hazard mitigation planning template for our Building Capacity for Hazard Mitigation Planning in Low-Capacity Communities research project; state-specific plans; and other helpful resources.
SCIPP is currently updating Climate Change Trends statements for each hazard and state, which will be released later in 2026. We will provide another announcement when this is available.
As always, please share any feedback (positive or negative) and suggestions regarding the Simple Planning Tool through the SPT Feedback Form (located at the bottom of the tool). You may also share how the tool has been helpful to you!
